Quail Hunting Guides & Hunting Safety

Our guided quail hunts – the best in the business.

One thing that really sets Rio Piedra Plantation apart from other quail hunting lodges is our team of highly skilled quail hunting guides. All of our quail hunting guides have been through extensive training and will use this knowledge to make sure your hunt is seamless and successful from start to finish.

Our quail hunting guides know the terrain, where the best cover is, where the food sources are, in short, where the birds are likely to be. They also know the idiosyncrasies and body language of each individual dog, and they know the telltale signs to watch for even before the dogs get “birdy.” Our quail hunting guides work in tandem with the pointers to keep you in a steady stream of flushes. Not only are they experts in the sport - excellent at handling the dogs, helping you find the perfect shot, and offering quail hunting safety tips - but they’re also really fun to be around. Many of our quail hunting guides have been at Rio Piedra Plantation over a decade, some close to two decades, and might just feel like family by end of your stay.

We keep our hunter-to-guide ratio low to ensure the best possible quail hunting experience for you. You and one other hunter will be placed with your own quail hunting guide during each hunt. Your hunting guide’s job is simple: to help you experience the best guided quail hunt possible while keeping you safe. He can also help you improve your shooting skills, offer guidance on how to line up the perfect shot, or just be there to tell a one-liner at the perfect time. Bottom line: our hunting guides can make the difference between just another guided quail hunt and an unforgettable experience.

Quail Hunting Safety

What to expect before the guided quail hunt

All of our guests are required to watch a short hunting safety video prior to their first hunt. Then, before you set out on the hunt, your guide will go over some additional quail hunting safety techniques such as situational awareness, gun safety, and tips on hunting with our dogs. Also, if you’d like a little more one-on-one assistance, you can always reserve our Orvis-certified shooting instructor to work with you in a private setting. He’ll help you improve your shooting skills, whether you are a beginner or experienced shooter. We truly believe that this focus on gun handling, shooting etiquette and safety ensures that you have the experience of a lifetime.

A few more things to think about

Whether you’re a novice or seasoned hunter, here a few more things to remember during the hunt:

  • ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings - wear a blaze orange hunting vest and/or hat at all times during the hunt.
  • Remember that we take things slower down here in the Plantation Belt – there’s always time and there’s always quail, so there’s no pressure to take a shot you’re not comfortable with.
  • When in doubt, ask. Our quail hunting guides are here for YOU. Don’t be afraid to ask them questions. You’ll find that when you leverage their knowledge and expertise, your quail hunting experience improves exponentially.
